Lifestyle: 8 Holiday Wines To Ring In 2017

New Year’s Eve is just around the corner and if you’re wondering what wine to serve your guests or which one to surprise your host with, I have some great recommendations for you.

Back in November, I went to a wine tasting with my networking group at Craft Cellars, Calgary based retail liquor store that provides its customers with a large selection of craft beer, spirits and premium wines. I’ve been to this store before and everyone is very helpful and knowledgable about the product.

That day we’ve tried two sparkling wines, two white ones and four red ones. They were served and paired with some delicious appetizers. Sipping on wine, we’ve had an amazing time laughing and joking, but also learning the tasting techniques and about the wine industry, and listening to engaging wine stories of our sommelier.

So what are the eight holiday wines to ring in 2017 with?

1. ENTRE VINYES FUNAMBUL CAVA BRUT NATURE | $23.99

Catalonia, Spain. It’s a clean, subtle sparkler with peach skin, green apple and Barlett pear fruit flavours, notes of sea salt and bread dough. It could be served with anything and a great party starter.

2. RICHMOND PLAINS BLANC DE NOIR | $27.99

Nelson, New Zealand. It has a faint pink diamond colour and is produced from both certified organic and biodynamic grapes. This white wine is full and fruity with attractive pear, baked apple and nectarine flavours, and is perfect an aperitif. It pairs really nicely with a slice of brie.

3. LASCAUX LES PIERRES D’ARGENT BLANC | $31.99

Haute-Garonne, France. This wine hails from the vineyards of Château de Lascaux  that have been in the family for thirteen generations. The name of the Domaine, “Lascaux” comes from a limestone specific to the Domaine’s vineyard sites. This blanc has the notes of honeysuckle and mineral.

4. CHATEAU DASVIN BEL AIR | $34.99

Bordeaux, France. It’s a savoury and classic red with plenty of sweet black fruit, charcoal and dried Mediterranean herbs. It surprisingly pairs well with turkey and cranberries as well as lamb and steak.

5. LA MANELLA ROSSI LEONUS | $29.99

Tuscany, Italy. The Leonus offers bright cherry flavours, juicy acidity and medium tannins. It only spends four months in oak barrels, which makes it always easily drinkable. It pairs up nicely with cherry tomatoes, parmigiano, and prosciutto.

6. SISTER’S RUN GRENACHE | $24.99

Barossa, Australia. This red is a delightful and savoury expression of Barossa Grenache Shiraz Mataro with herbal undertones. It’s produced in small quantities and is definitely a treat.

7. LADY HILL CABERNET FRANC | $49.99

Columbia Valley, USA. This beautiful deep maroon-to-mahagony red bursts with dense flavours of plum and tart blackberry fruits. Serve it with any hearty meats and rosemary twigs.

8. TERRE GAIE FIORE DI RANCIA DOCG | $22.99

Veneto, Italy. This tickling sparkler with natural flavours of orange is perfect to toast 2017 with. Lightly sweet, it is both an aperitif and dessert wine. Try it with lemon sorbet or orange hazelnut bread pudding.
