Haleakala: Above the Clouds and Beyond
So far we’ve travelled along the coastline of Maui, but what’s in the middle? A big crater! While driving up the windy roads, we saw the cloud formations up close and personal. But once we’ve reached the top of the summit, which is at 10,023 feet (3,055m), we ended up above the clouds with a spectacular view. It’s quite windy and the weather is unpredictable, so make sure to layer up. There’s not much vegetation there, but you will come across silversword. It looks like a spiky silver round ball. This plant is under protection and there is a hefty fine for touching it. After the photo op at the summit, we hiked down the Sliding Sands Trail towards the crater, which was an amazing experience.
