Business Portrait: 3 Best Writing Tips From The Guru of Technical Writing

Business Portrait: 3 Best Writing Tips From The Guru of Technical Writing

Have you ever sat in front of the computer staring at the blank screen searching for words to type? Or perhaps your employer has asked you to write up a training manual or a lengthy documentation report and you have no clue where to start? Or you just needed a second pair of eyes to review what you have already written?

I’ve had a pleasure photographing a technical writer and business owner, Mitch Willis of Cohort Technical Communications. Mitch helps medium and large infrastructure companies in the greater Calgary area gain peace of mind and reduce risk through the creation of effective documentation. In his own words, it really comes down to making order out of chaos.

While taking Mitch’s portrait, I was wondering whether he had any work rituals that help him get into the writing zone. He sure does and it entails listening to trance music beats like that of Armin van Buuren.

As our conversation continued, I’ve asked Mitch more questions and to share his three best writing tips.

What is the hardest thing about being your own boss that isn’t obvious?

Scheduling downtime for yourself. Making wellness a priority. Starting out, there’s a tendency to want to work 24/7 and earn as much money as possible. After working 24/7 you quickly realize this isn’t a good idea.

What does success mean to you?

Success is about providing massive value to my clients by helping them transform their documentation into problem-solving business assets.

What are your three best writing tips?

  1. The first step is to understand who your audience is and what’s important to them before attempting to write anything.
  2. Just write. Understand that writing is an iterative process. Anything you write will never be perfect the first time.
  3. Use spell check. It is your friend.

Thank you Mitch!

If you’re looking to write an operations manual, document your policies and procedures or just need an experienced eye to edit your own writing, I would recommend contacting Mitch.

Have a fantastic week,

Business Headshot: Insurance Broker Who Likes To Sing

Business Headshot: Insurance Broker Who Likes To Sing

It was a chilly November morning in Calgary when I met up with Dennis for his headshot session. I must say he was a real trooper and weathered out the cold with a smile.

Dennis is an insurance broker with Sproule Insurance, who specializes in business, home and auto insurance. He helps find insurance solutions for a wide range of industries,  and helps people protect their assets such as their home and business from financial loss. What he also does is he loves to turn up the music really loud while  driving and often catches himself singing along at the top of his lungs.

So while we were warming up with coffee and tea after the shoot, I’ve asked Dennis a few fun questions:

What was the best piece of business advice you were given?

Act boldly and unforeseen forces will come to your aid.

What quote or saying inspires and motivates you to be yourself and do what you love?

“Stay hungry. Stay foolish.” by Steve Jobs

What does success mean to you?

Success is the freedom to live your life as you see fit, not having to worry about monetary things.

If you’re looking for business or home and auto insurance or haven’t reviewed yours in a long time, contact Dennis Tran for a quote.
